Like a withered leaf, like an ordinary stone that has broken in half,

Like someone with their head cut off;

Tālova matthakacchinno,
Like a palm-tree with its top cut off,

aviruḷhī bhavanti te.
They are incapable of growth.

And through covering over as if with grass.

Dve uposathā dve pavāraṇā,
There are two observance days, two invitation days,

Cattāri kammāni jinena desitā;
And four legal procedures taught by the Victor.

Pañceva uddesā caturo bhavanti,
There are five recitations, and four, not otherwise;

Anaññathā āpattikkhandhā ca bhavanti satta.
And there are seven classes of offenses.

The four kinds of legal issues,

Are settled through seven principles:

Kiccaṁ ekena sammati”.
And business is settled through one.”

5. The offenses entailing expulsion, etc.

“Pārājikan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
“It is said, ‘An offense entailing expulsion’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it truly is:

Cuto paraddho bhaṭṭho ca,
When one has fallen away, offended, and fallen down,
- pli-tv-pvr10:63.4
saddhammā hi niraṅkato;
Removed from the true Teaching,
- pli-tv-pvr10:63.5
Saṁvāsopi tahiṁ natthi,
And excluded from the community there—
- pli-tv-pvr10:63.6
tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.
- pli-tv-pvr10:64.1
“Saṅghādiseso”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense entailing suspension’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it truly is:

Saṅghova deti parivāsaṁ,
Only the Sangha gives probation,
- pli-tv-pvr10:64.4
mūlāya paṭikassati;
Sends back to the beginning;

Mānattaṁ deti abbheti,
Gives the trial period, and rehabilitates—
- pli-tv-pvr10:64.6
tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

It is said, ‘An undetermined offense’.

Aniyato na niyato,
Undetermined, not determined,

anekaṁsikataṁ padaṁ;
An undecided rule;

Tiṇṇamaññataraṁ ṭhānaṁ,
It is one of three cases—
- pli-tv-pvr10:65.6
“aniyato”ti pavuccati.
It is called, ‘An undetermined offense’.
- pli-tv-pvr10:66.1
“Thullaccayan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘A serious offense’.
- pli-tv-pvr10:66.2
taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it truly is:

Ekassa mūle yo deseti,
The one who confesses to instigating another,
- pli-tv-pvr10:66.4
yo ca taṁ paṭigaṇhati;
And the one who agrees to it—
- pli-tv-pvr10:66.5
Accayo tena samo natthi,
There is no offense like that.
- pli-tv-pvr10:66.6
tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.
