Saṅghamajjhe gaṇamajjhe,
In the midst of the Sangha, in the midst of a group,

ekasseva ca ekato;
Or just one with one;

Nissajjitvāna deseti,
One relinquishes and then confesses—
- pli-tv-pvr10:67.6
tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Pācittiyan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense entailing confession’.

Taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;

Pāteti kusalaṁ dhammaṁ,
One drops the wholesome,

Ariyamaggaṁ aparajjhati;
Misses the noble path;

Cittasammohanaṭṭhānaṁ,
Having a deluded mind—

Tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.

“Pāṭidesanīyan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense entailing acknowledgment’.

Taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;

Bhikkhu aññātako santo,
An unrelated monk,
- pli-tv-pvr10:69.4
Kicchā laddhāya bhojanaṁ;
Whatever food she has obtained with difficulty;

Sāmaṁ gahetvā bhuñjeyya,
Should he receive it himself and eat it,
- pli-tv-pvr10:69.6
“Gārayhan”ti pavuccati.
It is called blameworthy.
- pli-tv-pvr10:70.1
Nimantanāsu bhuñjantā chandāya,
When eating at an invitation,
- pli-tv-pvr10:70.2
Vosāsati tattha bhikkhuniṁ;
And a nun there gives directions based on favoritism;
- pli-tv-pvr10:70.3
Anivāretvā tahiṁ bhuñje,
If they eat there without having stopped her,
- pli-tv-pvr10:70.4
“Gārayhan”ti pavuccati.
It is called blameworthy.
- pli-tv-pvr10:71.1
Saddhācittaṁ kulaṁ gantvā,
Going to a family that has faith,
- pli-tv-pvr10:71.2
appabhogaṁ anāḷiyaṁ;
But is poor with little wealth;
- pli-tv-pvr10:71.3
Agilāno tahiṁ bhuñje,
If one eats there without being sick,

“gārayhan”ti pavuccati.
It is called blameworthy.

Yo ce araññe viharanto,
If anyone stays in a wilderness,

sāsaṅke sabhayānake;
That is risky and dangerous;

Aviditaṁ tahiṁ bhuñje,
And they eat there without making it known,

“gārayhan”ti pavuccati.
It is called blameworthy.

Bhikkhunī aññātikā santā,
An unrelated nun,
- pli-tv-pvr10:73.2
Yaṁ paresaṁ mamāyitaṁ;
Whatever belongs to others—

Sappi telaṁ madhuṁ phāṇitaṁ,
Ghee, oil, honey, syrup,
- pli-tv-pvr10:73.4
Macchamaṁsaṁ atho khīraṁ;
Fish, meat, milk, and curd—

Dadhiṁ sayaṁ viññāpeyya bhikkhunī,
If she herself asks for them,
- pli-tv-pvr10:73.6
Gārayhapattā sugatassa sāsane.
She has committed a blameworthy act in the instruction of the Accomplished One.

“Dukkaṭan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense of wrong conduct’.

taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it truly is:

Aparaddhaṁ viraddhañca,
Offended, and failed,
- pli-tv-pvr10:74.4
khalitaṁ yañca dukkaṭaṁ.
Faltered, and what is badly done.
- pli-tv-pvr10:75.1
Yaṁ manusso kare pāpaṁ,
Whatever people do that is bad,
- pli-tv-pvr10:75.2
āvi vā yadi vā raho;
Whether in public or in private;
- pli-tv-pvr10:75.3
“Dukkaṭan”ti pavedenti,
They declare to be wrong conduct.
- pli-tv-pvr10:75.4
tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.
- pli-tv-pvr10:76.1
“Dubbhāsitan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘An offense of wrong speech’.
- pli-tv-pvr10:76.2
taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it truly is:
- pli-tv-pvr10:76.3
Dubbhāsitaṁ durābhaṭṭhaṁ,
Wrong speech, wrong utterance,
- pli-tv-pvr10:76.4
saṅkiliṭṭhañca yaṁ padaṁ;
Whatever sentence is defiled;
- pli-tv-pvr10:76.5
Yañca viññū garahanti,
And condemned by the wise—
- pli-tv-pvr10:76.6
tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.
- pli-tv-pvr10:77.1
“Sekhiyan”ti yaṁ vuttaṁ,
It is said, ‘Of training’.
- pli-tv-pvr10:77.2
taṁ suṇohi yathātathaṁ;
Listen to it as it truly is:
- pli-tv-pvr10:77.3
Sekkhassa sikkhamānassa,
For a trainee who is training,
- pli-tv-pvr10:77.4
ujumaggānusārino.
Following the straight path,
- pli-tv-pvr10:78.1
Ādi cetaṁ caraṇañca,
This is the beginning and the right conduct,
- pli-tv-pvr10:78.2
mukhaṁ saññamasaṁvaro;
With a controlled and restrained mouth—
- pli-tv-pvr10:78.3
Sikkhā etādisī natthi,
There is no training like this.
- pli-tv-pvr10:78.4
tenetaṁ iti vuccati.
This is why it is called that.
- pli-tv-pvr10:79.1
Channamativassati,
It rains on what’s concealed,
- pli-tv-pvr10:79.2
vivaṭaṁ nātivassati;
Not on what’s revealed;
- pli-tv-pvr10:79.3
Tasmā channaṁ vivaretha,
Therefore, reveal the concealed,
- pli-tv-pvr10:79.4
evaṁ taṁ nātivassati.
And it won’t be rained upon.
- pli-tv-pvr10:80.1
Gati migānaṁ pavanaṁ,
The forest is the destination of deer,
- pli-tv-pvr10:80.2
Ākāso pakkhinaṁ gati;
The air is the destination of birds;
- pli-tv-pvr10:80.3
Vibhavo gati dhammānaṁ,
Non-existence is the destination of phenomena,
- pli-tv-pvr10:80.4
Nibbānaṁ arahato gatīti.
Extinguishment is the destination of a Perfected One.”

In common, not in common,

Sāsanaṁ anuggahāya,
To support Buddhism,

gāthāsaṅgaṇikaṁ idanti.
