Commentary
General: The translation is based on Roth 1995, with minor modifications. Whereas Roth translated the numerous participles with present tense here the past tense is normally used (e. g., “who perfected everything possible for Nippur” i 57–59 instead of “who perfects …”), except in those cases that clearly refer to a continous action (e. g., “who does not fail (caring) for Ezida” iii 13–15).
Prologue:
ii 66f.: Roth 1995, 78 translates “temple of Ḫursagkalamma”. However, note that bītim Ḫ. is not a genitive construction but an apposition. Thus Ḫ. is not the city but the temple of Ištar.
iii 16: For ilu šarrī see the discussion in Roth 1995, 140 n. 1.
iii 27–29: Roth 1995, 78f. follows CAD Š/3, 225 s. v. šuklulu h and refers the relative clause to ḫaṭṭim u agêm: “bestowed upon him by the wise goddess Mama”. However, instead of the suffix -šu one would expect the dative suffix -šum, actually attested in the OB variant A (Borger 1979, 9).
iv 29: Borger 1979, 6 reads igmilu. Thus also Roth 1995, 80 “who showed mercy”. Since Hammurapi destroyed Mari and Tuttul this would be strange historically. The difficulty with the reading ikmilu is that elsewhere kamālu is only attested in younger texts and almost always construed with ittī.
iv 37: Roth 1995, 80 understands Ninazu as female, but he is generally masculine (Wiggerman 1998–2001, 329), also clearly shown by the suffix -šu in iv 38.
v 10: muštešmī is probably Štn, see Mayer 1997, 170–171.
v 16–17: Roth 1995, 81 (also CAD 283 ūsu B b) translates “people of the land”. The divison of the lines (nišī in l. 16, but mātim ūsim in l. 17) and the parallel mātam ūsam kīnam ... ušaṣbitu CH xlvii 6–8 suggest that mātim is governed by šūḫuzim (so also AHw. 19 aḫāzu Š 3a).
