Commentary

General:

Corrected translation after George 2015b.

Although YOS 11, 16 (= Text A) does not show it formally, this tablet contains two different incantations, as proven through the duplicate YOS 11, 77 (= Text B) which ends with the sealing formula tu-ú-en-nu-ri (l. B15). The incantation might be addressed against scorpion (a creature which, according to CUSAS 10, 19: 4, lives in the asurrûm,).

A1: In view of A2 it is tempting to restitute [ṣe(?)]-et er-ṣe-tim ṭà-ab, but ṣītum (or ṣētum) are f. nouns, a fact which precludes ṭāb from being their predicate. The provisionary translation offered here tries to accommodate to this difficulty by splitting the line to a quasi-cleft sentence.

A3//B13–15: The duplicates differ here slightly: in text B the magician introduces himself in the 1 pr. voice.
