SEAL no. 7154 · A 633 · Incantations · maškadum · Adab (mod. Tell Bismaya) · 11 lines · 41 words · 123 signs · 1 Sumerograms

The tablet begins with a Hurrian(?) incantation (ll. 1–7): al-ri-ši-ab ta-ar-zu-wa-ni x [... ...] / a-zi-ni-en zu IGI?/PI?+KUR a-ni-en pa-aḫ-me-ni-e[n?] / m[u?-...] / tu-di ba-da-ni ú-di ba-da-n[i] / al-ri di-ki-ib-ti ba-da-ni / ḫa-PI-ma-ḫa-at tu-di ba-da-ni / ib-ḫa-ni ba-ni [a]d? lu?-du-ti ru-ri ka-ra-ni ta-aḫ-PI-da / ši-ab ši-ab uš-ta am-ta-ri. This incantation is echoed in the first colophon, on l. 16: ḫa-ap-pa-ḫa-zi ḫa-la-di? ḫa-pa-ḫa-zi. Note the Southern orthography /pi/ (l. 10).

Translation

maškadum! maškadum! – not maškadum (Text: mašra) šuʾum (is its name)!

9 It came down from heaven.

10–11 In the pit is its location, in the track of the bull is its laying.

12–13 It enters with the entering of the herd; it goes out with the going out of the herd.

13–14 I invoke on you (the name of) An and Antum: wherever you have grasped you will release!

14 (Incantation formula)

15 Leave, maškadum, leave! Become still!

Commentary

8: ú-la ma-aš-ra šu-ú-um: ma-aš-ra probably a mistake for ma-aš-ka-du-um. The gloss-like comment “maškadum! maškadum! – not maškadum, šu’um (is the name of the disease)” is typical of the maškadum incantations from OB to NA (see Collins 1999, 233ff.).

12: i-ru-ab, iṣ-ṣí: one expects ir-ru-ub. If not a simple mistake, this form may be influenced by the Assyrian dialect where erēbum belongs to the (a/u) group. The verbal form iṣ-ṣí is also uncommon, as uṣ-ṣí is expected. Note, however, that in post-OB texts verbs prima w show at times such forms (so, e.g. ibbal instead of ubbal, etc.), cf. GAG§103n.

15: Reading ṣī (waṣû-G Imp.) "leave!" and šaḫur (šuḫarrurum-Š Imp.) "stay still!", following Farber 2018, 193, 195.
