1 [Šamaš] tor[e off the plant-o]f-the-heart [in the mountain] –

2–3 It [sei]zed [the heart of Šamaš], who tore [it],

3 It sei[zed] (the heart) of Sîn the shepherd,

4 It sei[zed] the heart of the ox in the stall,

5 It seized the heart of the sheep in the fo[ld],

6–7 It seized the heart of so-and-so son of so-and-so whose god is so-and-so (and) his goddess is so-and-so,

8 I conjure you by the earth and the lakes:

9 “Release the heart of Šamaš who tore you off!

10 Release (the heart) of [Sî]n the sh[epherd]!

11 Release [the heart of the o]x in the stall!

12 Release [seized the heart of the sheep] in the fold!

13–14 Release [the heart of so-and-so] son of so-and-so whose god is so-and-so (and) his [goddess is so-and]-so!

Commentary

3, 10: The first sign in both lines was collated by Farber (YOS 11, p. 62) as ri. Reading is putative, as one expects simply libbi Sîn, not rēʾi Sîn.

6, 13: Note the assimilation /lš/ > /šš/ (iš-šu < ilšu). Similar cases are found in the bilingual proverb BWL Pl. 68: 2, 5 (a-ka-šu for akaššu < akalšu), and the love-related composition MIO 12, 52f.: 11 (Wasserman 2016, 125, 128): kīma na-aš-ši (nalši) irimmu izannan “Like dew charms (of love) rain down (on him).
