col. i

1       ⌈Copy of⌉ “I will praise him who listens to prayers of benediction”.

2       End of “I will praise him who listens to prayers of benediction”.

3                 Kummu-song for Adad.

4       “We hear that his will to battle is unbending.

5       He turns the land upside down and won’t let it stay alive.

6       Order him: ‘Get up! Depart!’ He shall listen to your command and draw back.”

7       Enlil began to speak and in the assembly of all gods he spoke:

8       “A mountain alone (Enlil) is ruling the gods!

9       (But) he (Adad) took up battle in times of peace.

10     They shall bring Bēlet-ilī, they shall let her appear in front of me!”

-----

11     When they had brought Bēlet-ilī to him, Enlil spoke to her:

12     “Depart! Calm your brother. Save [...] from his hand.”

13     [She heard] this command, stepping out of his door.

14     [She ...], pacifying her [bro]ther.

15     [.......] prayers of benediction [......Ni]nmenna

16     [...] rocks(?).

col. ii

1       He welcomed him, the Father of the Gods[, Enlil]

2       (and) spoke to him words of praise:

-----

3       “Foremost of your brothers, Bull of Heaven,

4       on whom the life of all human beings depends!

5       You poured out deep silence in my land,

6       your battle ploughed all inhabited lands.

7       Herewith I bestow the lords of daises upon you,

8       I entrust the beclouded to your hand.

9       Your abode shall be permanent in my land.

10     Like the storm-winds you are walking forward.

11     (Your) offering table shall truly rejoice on its day.

12     The king, he of his forefathers, shall worship you.

-----

13     You, listen to his prayer of benediction!

14     Let abundance rain down on his land!

15     Let his fate increase year after year!

16     Make the lands kneel down in front of his feet!

17     When he goes to battle,

18     go with him, knock down his opponent!

19     In front of his feet make kneel down the land!

20     [...] his kings(?).

Commentary

i 1: For the restoration at the beginning of the line see Schwemer 2001, 420. For previous suggestions see Wilcke 1977, 180f. n. 2.

i 8: šadû hardly refers to Adad since “mountain” only occurs as an unspecific metaphor for “protection” in personal names with Adad as theophoric element, see Schwemer 2001, 715. But Enlil is quite often the “mountain” in Mesopotamian texts, see (although with different conclusions) Piesl 1969. Enlil is also the ruler of the gods. For the missing mimation with šadû cf. kummi i 3 and paššūru ii 11. The difficulty with this interpretation is the subject change between lines i 8 and 9.

i 9: AHw. 1057 s. v. sulummāʾu reads e su-lum-ma “ohne V.[ersöhnungsgestus]”. CAD S 372 s. v. sulummāʾu “He attacked in spite of(?) a peace agreement”. CAD Š/2, 173 s. v. šašmu a emends the text to e-<la>. Schwemer 2001, 420 “trotz des Friedens”. See Streck 2010, 563 for e- as spelling for i(n)-, also attested in Agušaya A iv 7.

i 13–14: The present tenses indicate perhaps circumstantial clauses.

i 15: Nine-menna “Lady of the tiara” is a name of the Mother Goddess, see Krebernik 1997, 505f. § 3.2.3.

ii 7–8: uštatlimkum and apqid are analyzed as performatives.

ii 12: šūt is here 3. sg. masc., also attested elsewhere: AHw. 1290 s. v. šūt C, CAD Š/3, 491 s. v. šūt B c.

ii 14: Schwemer 2001, 421 n. 3497: (ina) mātišu “ein durch das Versmaß bedingter elliptischer Ausdruck”. It is suggested here that šu-uz-ni-na-am <am>-ma-ti-šu is a haplography.
