Abarbanel on Ezekiel
- _.38.5.1
And he mentioned that other nations would come with him—namely, the people of Persia, Cush, and Put—and said of them all, “shields and helmets,” to indicate that although it is the custom of the Cushites to go to war without weapons of war, but only with stones from the field, yet because they are coming with Gog and Magog, they will all carry shields in their hands and helmets on their heads. This is what he means when he says, “You are to say that since you are with Gog and Magog , they will indeed come with shields and helmets, (6) and so will Gomer and all its divisions—that is, the assembly of Gomer and all its armies—and so will the house of Togarmah, the farthest north, come with Gog. And Joseph ben Gurion has already mentioned that there are ten families from the house of Togarmah; and since among the families of Togarmah there are some who are not from the farthest north—namely, the Turks who dwell in the land of Greece and rule over it today, and they too are part of Togarmah, as mentioned; therefore, to exclude them from the group coming with Gog, it says “the house of Togarmah in the far north,” meaning those who are in the far north, and in general it says, “against Gog, many nations are with you.”
