   Bhikkhūhīti

   The monks:

   aññehi bhikkhūhi. Ye passanti, ye suṇanti, tehi vattabbo—

   other monks, those who see it or hear it. They should correct him like this:

   “māyasmā samaggassa saṅghassa bhedāya parakkami, bhedanasaṁvattanikaṁ vā adhikaraṇaṁ samādāya paggayha aṭṭhāsi.

   “Venerable, don’t pursue schism in the united Sangha or persist in taking up a legal issue conducive to schism.

4. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.22

   Sametāyasmā saṅghena.

   Stay with the Sangha,

5. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.23

   Samaggo hi saṅgho sammodamāno avivadamāno ekuddeso phāsu viharatī”ti.

   for a united Sangha—in concord, in harmony, having a joint recitation—is at ease.”

6. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.24

   Dutiyampi vattabbo.

   And they should correct him a second

7. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.25

   Tatiyampi vattabbo.

   and a third time.

8. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.26

   Sace paṭinissajjati, iccetaṁ kusalaṁ;

   If he stops, all is well.

9. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.27

   no ce paṭinissajjati, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

   If he does not stop, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

10. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.28

    Sutvā na vadanti, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

    If those who hear about it do not say anything, they commit an offense of wrong conduct.

11. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.29

    So bhikkhu saṅghamajjhampi ākaḍḍhitvā vattabbo—

    That monk, even if he has to be pulled into the Sangha, should be corrected like this:

12. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.30

    “māyasmā samaggassa saṅghassa bhedāya parakkami, bhedanasaṁvattanikaṁ vā adhikaraṇaṁ samādāya paggayha aṭṭhāsi.

    “Venerable, don’t pursue schism in the united Sangha or persist in taking up a legal issue conducive to schism.

    Sametāyasmā saṅghena.

    Stay with the Sangha,

    So bhikkhu samanubhāsitabbo—

    Should press him:

    “evañca pana, bhikkhave, samanubhāsitabbo.

    “And, monks, he should be pressed like this.

    Byattena bhikkhunā paṭibalena saṅgho ñāpetabbo—

    A competent and capable monk should inform the Sangha:

    ‘Suṇātu me, bhante, saṅgho.

    ‘Please, venerables, I ask the Sangha to listen.

23. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.41

    Ayaṁ itthannāmo bhikkhu samaggassa saṅghassa bhedāya parakkamati.

    The monk so-and-so is pursuing schism in the united Sangha.

24. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.42

    So taṁ vatthuṁ na paṭinissajjati.

    And he keeps on doing it.

25. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.43

    Yadi saṅghassa pattakallaṁ, saṅgho itthannāmaṁ bhikkhuṁ samanubhāseyya tassa vatthussa paṭinissaggāya.

    If the Sangha is ready, it should press monk so-and-so to make him stop.

26. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.44

    Esā ñatti.

    This is the motion.

27. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.45

    Suṇātu me, bhante, saṅgho.

    Please, venerables, I ask the Sangha to listen.

28. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.46

    Ayaṁ itthannāmo bhikkhu samaggassa saṅghassa bhedāya parakkamati.

    The monk so-and-so is pursuing schism in the united Sangha.

29. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.47

    So taṁ vatthuṁ na paṭinissajjati.

    And he keeps on doing it.

30. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.48

    Saṅgho itthannāmaṁ bhikkhuṁ samanubhāsati tassa vatthussa paṭinissaggāya.

    The Sangha presses monk so-and-so to make him stop.

31. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.49

    Yassāyasmato khamati itthannāmassa bhikkhuno samanubhāsanā tassa vatthussa paṭinissaggāya, so tuṇhassa;

    Any monk who approves of pressing monk so-and-so to make him stop should remain silent.

32. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.50

    yassa nakkhamati, so bhāseyya.

    Any monk who doesn’t approve should speak up.

33. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.51

    Dutiyampi etamatthaṁ vadāmi …pe…

    For the second time, I speak on this matter. …

34. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.52

    tatiyampi etamatthaṁ vadāmi—

    For the third time, I speak on this matter.

35. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.53

    suṇātu me, bhante, saṅgho.

    Please, venerables, I ask the Sangha to listen.

36. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.54

    Ayaṁ itthannāmo bhikkhu samaggassa saṅghassa bhedāya parakkamati.

    The monk so-and-so is pursuing schism in the united Sangha.

37. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.55

    So taṁ vatthuṁ na paṭinissajjati.

    And he keeps on doing it.

38. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.56

    Saṅgho itthannāmaṁ bhikkhuṁ samanubhāsati tassa vatthussa paṭinissaggāya.

    The Sangha presses monk so-and-so to make him stop.

39. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.57

    Yassāyasmato khamati itthannāmassa bhikkhuno samanubhāsanā tassa vatthussa paṭinissaggāya, so tuṇhassa;

    Any monk who approves of pressing monk so-and-so to make him stop should remain silent.

40. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.58

    yassa nakkhamati, so bhāseyya.

    Any monk who doesn’t approve should speak up.

    Samanubhaṭṭho saṅghena itthannāmo bhikkhu tassa vatthussa paṭinissaggāya.

    The Sangha has pressed monk so-and-so to make him stop.

    Khamati saṅghassa, tasmā tuṇhī,

    The Sangha approves and is therefore silent.

43. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.61

    evametaṁ dhārayāmī’”ti.

    I will remember it thus.’”

44. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.62

    Ñattiyā dukkaṭaṁ,

    After the motion, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

45. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.63

    dvīhi kammavācāhi thullaccayā,

    After each of the first two announcements, he commits a serious offense.

46. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.64

    kammavācāpariyosāne āpatti saṅghādisesassa.

    When the last announcement is finished, he commits an offense entailing suspension.

47. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:2.65

    Saṅghādisesaṁ ajjhāpajjantassa ñattiyā dukkaṭaṁ, dvīhi kammavācāhi thullaccayā paṭippassambhanti.

    For one who commits the offense entailing suspension, the offense of wrong conduct and the serious offenses are annulled.

    Saṅghādisesoti

    He commits an offense entailing suspension:

    …pe… tenapi vuccati saṅghādisesoti.

    … Therefore, too, it is called “an offense entailing suspension”.

    Dhammakamme dhammakammasaññī na paṭinissajjati, āpatti saṅghādisesassa.

    If it is a legitimate legal procedure, and he perceives it as such, and he does not stop, he commits an offense entailing suspension.

51. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.1.2

    Dhammakamme vematiko na paṭinissajjati, āpatti saṅghādisesassa.

    If it is a legitimate legal procedure, but he is unsure of it, and he does not stop, he commits an offense entailing suspension.

52. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.1.3

    Dhammakamme adhammakammasaññī na paṭinissajjati, āpatti saṅghādisesassa.

    If it is a legitimate legal procedure, but he perceives it as illegitimate, and he does not stop, he commits an offense entailing suspension.

53. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.1.4

    Adhammakamme dhammakammasaññī, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

    If it is an illegitimate legal procedure, but he perceives it as legitimate, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

54. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.1.5

    Adhammakamme vematiko, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

    If it is an illegitimate legal procedure, but he is unsure of it, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

55. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.1.6

    Adhammakamme adhammakammasaññī, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

    If it is an illegitimate legal procedure, and he perceives it as such, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

    Anāpatti—

    There is no offense:

    asamanubhāsantassa,

    if he has not been pressed;

58. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.2.3

    paṭinissajjantassa,

    if he stops;

59. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.2.4

    ummattakassa,

    if he is insane;

60. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.2.5

    khittacittassa,

    if he is deranged;

61. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.2.6

    vedanāṭṭassa,

    if he is overwhelmed by pain;

62. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.2.7

    ādikammikassāti.

    if he is the first offender.

63. pli-tv-bu-vb-ss10:3.2.8

    Saṅghabhedasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ dasamaṁ.

    The training rule on causing a schism in the Sangha, the tenth, is finished.
