49. Studying worldly subjects
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.1
Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying at Sāvatthī in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Monastery.
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.2
Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo tiracchānavijjaṁ pariyāpuṇanti.
At that time the nuns from the group of six were studying worldly subjects.
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.3
Manussā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—
People complained and criticized them,
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.4
“kathañhi nāma bhikkhuniyo tiracchānavijjaṁ pariyāpuṇissanti, seyyathāpi gihiniyo kāmabhoginiyo”ti.
“How can the nuns study worldly subjects? They’re just like householders who indulge in worldly pleasures!”
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.5
Assosuṁ kho bhikkhuniyo tesaṁ manussānaṁ ujjhāyantānaṁ khiyyantānaṁ vipācentānaṁ.
The nuns heard the complaints of those people,
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.6
Yā tā bhikkhuniyo appicchā …pe… tā ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—
and the nuns of few desires complained and criticized them,
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.7
“kathañhi nāma chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo tiracchānavijjaṁ pariyāpuṇissantī”ti …pe…
“How can the nuns from the group of six do this?” …
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.8
“saccaṁ kira, bhikkhave, chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo tiracchānavijjaṁ pariyāpuṇantī”ti?
“Is it true, monks, that those nuns do this?”
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.9
“Saccaṁ, bhagavā”ti.
“It’s true, sir.”
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.10
Vigarahi buddho bhagavā …pe…
The Buddha rebuked them …
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.11
kathañhi nāma, bhikkhave, chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo tiracchānavijjaṁ pariyāpuṇissanti.
“How can the nuns from the group of six do this?
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.12
Netaṁ, bhikkhave, appasannānaṁ vā pasādāya …pe…
This will affect people’s confidence …” …
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.13
evañca pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniyo imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddisantu—
“And, monks, the nuns should recite this training rule like this:
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:1.14.1
“Yā pana bhikkhunī tiracchānavijjaṁ pariyāpuṇeyya, pācittiyan”ti.
‘If a nun studies worldly subjects, she commits an offense entailing confession.’”
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.1
Yā panāti
A:
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.2
yā yādisā …pe…
whoever …
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.3
bhikkhunīti
Nun:
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.4
…pe… ayaṁ imasmiṁ atthe adhippetā bhikkhunīti.
… The nun who has been given the full ordination in unanimity by both Sanghas through a legal procedure consisting of one motion and three announcements that is irreversible and fit to stand—this sort of nun is meant in this case.
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.5
Tiracchānavijjā nāma
Worldly subjects:
- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.6

- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.7
Pariyāpuṇeyyāti

- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.8
padena pariyāpuṇāti, pade pade āpatti pācittiyassa.

- pli-tv-bi-vb-pc49:2.1.9
Akkharāya pariyāpuṇāti, akkharakkharāya āpatti pācittiyassa.
