56. Al-Waaqia — The Inevitable

56:1
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ
Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAatu
When the event befalleth
56:2
لَيۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ
Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathibatun
There is no denying that it will befall
56:3
خَافِضَةࣱ رَّافِعَةٌ
Khafidatun rafiAAatun
Abasing (some), exalting (others)
56:4
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجࣰّ ا
Itha rujjati alardu rajjan
When the earth is shaken with a shock
56:5
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسࣰّ ا
Wabussati aljibalu bassan
And the hills are ground to powder
56:6
فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءࣰ مُّنۢبَثࣰّ ا
Fakanat habaan munbaththan
So that they become a scattered dust
56:7
وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجࣰ ا ثَلَٰثَةࣰ‏
Wakuntum azwajan thalathatan
And ye will be three kinds
56:8
فَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ
Faashabu almaymanati ma ashabu almaymanati
(First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand
56:9
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ
Waashabu almashamati ma ashabu almashamati
And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand
56:10
وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ
Waalssabiqoona alssabiqoona
And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race
56:11
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ
Olaika almuqarraboona
Those are they who will be brought nigh
56:12
فِي جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
Fee jannati alnnaAAeemi
In gardens of delight
56:13
ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
Thullatun mina alawwaleena
A multitude of those of old
56:14
وَقَلِيلࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ
Waqaleelun mina alakhireena
And a few of those of later time
56:15
عَلَىٰ سُرُرࣲ مَّوۡضُونَةࣲ‏
AAala sururin mawdoonatin
On lined couches
56:16
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ
Muttakieena AAalayha mutaqabileena
Reclining therein face to face
56:17
يَطُوفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَٰنࣱ مُّخَلَّدُونَ
Yatoofu AAalayhim wildanun mukhalladoona
There wait on them immortal youths
56:18
بِأَكۡوَابࣲ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأۡسࣲ مِّن مَّعِينࣲ‏
Biakwabin waabareeqa wakasin min maAAeenin
With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring
56:19
لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ
La yusaddaAAoona AAanha wala yunzifoona
Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness
56:20
وَفَٰكِهَةࣲ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
Wafakihatin mimma yatakhayyaroona
And fruit that they prefer
56:21
وَلَحۡمِ طَيۡرࣲ مِّمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ
Walahmi tayrin mimma yashtahoona
And flesh of fowls that they desire
56:22
وَحُورٌ عِينࣱ‏
Wahoorun AAeenun
And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes
56:23
كَأَمۡثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤۡلُوِٕ ٱلۡمَكۡنُونِ
Kaamthali allului almaknooni
Like unto hidden pearls
56:24
جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ
Jazaan bima kanoo yaAAmaloona
Reward for what they used to do
56:25
لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغۡوࣰ ا وَلَا تَأۡثِيمًا
La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwan wala tatheeman
There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination
56:26
إِلَّا قِيلࣰ ا سَلَٰمࣰ ا سَلَٰمࣰ ا
Illa qeelan salaman salaman
(Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace
56:27
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡيَمِينِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
Waashabu alyameeni ma ashabu alyameeni
And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand
56:28
فِي سِدۡرࣲ مَّخۡضُودࣲ‏
Fee sidrin makhdoodin
Among thornless lote-trees
56:29
وَطَلۡحࣲ مَّنضُودࣲ‏
Watalhin mandoodin
And clustered plantains
56:30
وَظِلࣲّ مَّمۡدُودࣲ‏
Wathillin mamdoodin
And spreading shade
56:31
وَمَآءࣲ مَّسۡكُوبࣲ‏
Wamain maskoobin
And water gushing
56:32
وَفَٰكِهَةࣲ كَثِيرَةࣲ‏
Wafakihatin katheeratin
And fruit in plenty
56:33
لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةࣲ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةࣲ‏
La maqtooAAatin wala mamnooAAatin
Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden
56:34
وَفُرُشࣲ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ
Wafurushin marfooAAatin
And raised couches
56:35
إِنَّآ أَنشَأۡنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءࣰ‏
Inna anshanahunna inshaan
Lo! We have created them a (new) creation
56:36
فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا
FajaAAalnahunna abkaran
And made them virgins
56:37
عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابࣰ ا
AAuruban atraban
Lovers, friends
56:38
لِّأَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
Liashabi alyameeni
For those on the right hand
56:39
ثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
Thullatun mina alawwaleena
A multitude of those of old
56:40
وَثُلَّةࣱ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ
Wathullatun mina alakhireena
And a multitude of those of later time
56:41
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ
Waashabu alshshimali ma ashabu alshshimali
And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand
56:42
فِي سَمُومࣲ وَحَمِيمࣲ‏
Fee samoomin wahameemin
In scorching wind and scalding water
56:43
وَظِلࣲّ مِّن يَحۡمُومࣲ‏
Wathillin min yahmoomin
And shadow of black smoke
56:44
لَّا بَارِدࣲ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
La baridin wala kareemin
Neither cool nor refreshing
56:45
إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِينَ
Innahum kanoo qabla thalika mutrafeena
Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury
56:46
وَكَانُواْ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ
Wakanoo yusirroona AAala alhinthi alAAatheemi
And used to persist in the awful sin
56:47
وَكَانُواْ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابࣰ ا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ
Wakanoo yaqooloona aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamabAAoothoona
And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again
56:48
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ
Awa abaona alawwaloona
And also our forefathers
56:49
قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ
Qul inna alawwaleena waalakhireena
Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time
56:50
لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوۡمࣲ مَّعۡلُومࣲ‏
LamajmooAAoona ila meeqati yawmin maAAloomin
Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day
56:51
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبُونَ
Thumma innakum ayyuha alddalloona almukaththiboona
Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers
56:52
لَأٓكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرࣲ مِّن زَقُّومࣲ‏
Laakiloona min shajarin min zaqqoomin
Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum
56:53
فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ
Famalioona minha albutoona
And will fill your bellies therewith
56:54
فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَمِيمِ
Fashariboona AAalayhi mina alhameemi
And thereon ye will drink of boiling water
56:55
فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرۡبَ ٱلۡهِيمِ
Fashariboona shurba alheemi
Drinking even as the camel drinketh
56:56
هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ
Hatha nuzuluhum yawma alddeeni
This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment
56:57
نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ
Nahnu khalaqnakum falawla tusaddiqoona
We created you. Will ye then admit the truth
56:58
أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ
Afaraaytum ma tumnoona
Have ye seen that which ye emit
56:59
ءَأَنتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡخَٰلِقُونَ
Aantum takhluqoonahu am nahnu alkhaliqoona
Do ye create it or are We the Creator
56:60
نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَيۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ
Nahnu qaddarna baynakumu almawta wama nahnu bimasbooqeena
We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun
56:61
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِي مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ
AAala an nubaddila amthalakum wanunshiakum fee ma la taAAlamoona
That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not
56:62
وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
Walaqad AAalimtumu alnnashata aloola falawla tathakkaroona
And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect
56:63
أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ
Afaraaytum ma tahruthoona
Have ye seen that which ye cultivate
56:64
ءَأَنتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ
Aantum tazraAAoonahu am nahnu alzzariAAoona
Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer
56:65
لَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ حُطَٰمࣰ ا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ
Law nashao lajaAAalnahu hutaman fathaltum tafakkahoona
If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim
56:66
إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ
Inna lamughramoona
Lo! we are laden with debt
56:67
بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ
Bal nahnu mahroomoona
Nay, but we are deprived
56:68
أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَآءَ ٱلَّذِي تَشۡرَبُونَ
Afaraaytumu almaa allathee tashraboona
Have ye observed the water which ye drink
56:69
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنزِلُونَ
Aantum anzaltumoohu mina almuzni am nahnu almunziloona
Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder
56:70
لَوۡ نَشَآءُ جَعَلۡنَٰهُ أُجَاجࣰ ا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ
Law nashao jaAAalnahu ojajan falawla tashkuroona
If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks
56:71
أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِي تُورُونَ
Afaraaytumu alnnara allatee tooroona
Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out
56:72
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنشِـُٔونَ
Aantum anshatum shajarataha am nahnu almunshioona
Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower
56:73
نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةࣰ وَمَتَٰعࣰ ا لِّلۡمُقۡوِينَ
Nahnu jaAAalnaha tathkiratan wamataAAan lilmuqweena
We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness
56:74
فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ
Fasabbih biismi rabbika alAAatheemi
Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous
56:75
۞فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ
Fala oqsimu bimawaqiAAi alnnujoomi
Nay, I swear by the places of the stars
56:76
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمࣱ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
Wainnahu laqasamun law taAAlamoona AAatheemun
And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew
56:77
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانࣱ كَرِيمࣱ‏
Innahu laquranun kareemun
That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an
56:78
فِي كِتَٰبࣲ مَّكۡنُونࣲ‏
Fee kitabin maknoonin
In a Book kept hidden
56:79
لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ
La yamassuhu illa almutahharoona
Which none toucheth save the purified
56:80
تَنزِيلࣱ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
Tanzeelun min rabbi alAAalameena
A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds
56:81
أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ
Afabihatha alhadeethi antum mudhinoona
Is it this Statement that ye scorn
56:82
وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ
WatajAAaloona rizqakum annakum tukaththiboona
And make denial thereof your livelihood
56:83
فَلَوۡلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلۡحُلۡقُومَ
Falawla itha balaghati alhulqooma
Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)
56:84
وَأَنتُمۡ حِينَئِذࣲ تَنظُرُونَ
Waantum heenaithin tanthuroona
And ye are at that moment looking
56:85
وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَيۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ
Wanahnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walakin la tubsiroona
And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not
56:86
فَلَوۡلَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَيۡرَ مَدِينِينَ
Falawla in kuntum ghayra madeeneena
Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us)
56:87
تَرۡجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ
TarjiAAoonaha in kuntum sadiqeena
Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful
56:88
فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ
Faamma in kana mina almuqarrabeena
Thus if he is of those brought nigh
56:89
فَرَوۡحࣱ وَرَيۡحَانࣱ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمࣲ‏
Farawhun warayhanun wajannatu naAAeemin
Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight
56:90
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
Waamma in kana min ashabi alyameeni
And if he is of those on the right hand
56:91
فَسَلَٰمࣱ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
Fasalamun laka min ashabi alyameeni
Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand
56:92
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
Waamma in kana mina almukaththibeena alddalleena
But if he is of the rejecters, the erring
56:93
فَنُزُلࣱ مِّنۡ حَمِيمࣲ‏
Fanuzulun min hameemin
Then the welcome will be boiling water
56:94
وَتَصۡلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
Watasliyatu jaheemin
And roasting at hell-fire
56:95
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلۡيَقِينِ
Inna hatha lahuwa haqqu alyaqeeni
Lo! this is certain truth
56:96
فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ
Fasabbih biismi rabbika alAAatheemi
Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous
